About

Our group, the Chippewa Valley Aphasia Group (CVAG) has banded together to purchase a Kindle2. Group members wanted to take some “test drives” of this technology. We are in the process of writing 6 short (400 to 500 word) articles about our experiences, in the hopes that other people with aphasia and groups will read about our Kindle Journey. First, some basic information about our Aphasia Group here in Eau Claire, Wisconsin.

Since 1997 the Speech Pathology Department at LutherHospital, in partnership with the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire Department of Communication Disorders has provided a unique group therapy approach designed to address the long-term communicative and psychosocial issues associated with living with aphasia. This conversationally based program provides language stimulation, social support and education to patients and family members who cope with the challenges of living with aphasia. The group has helped identify barriers that limit individuals with aphasia’s ability to participate in community activity. A community re-integration approach helps meet group members needs for meaningful activity.

The Chippewa Valley Community Aphasia Group is for persons with aphasia and their caregivers. We pursue the following mission: “We seek to reduce the social isolation imposed by aphasia by providing opportunities for communication success and improved well-being through group and community activities.” The Community Aphasia Group meetings are held weekly at a local church in the community.

Professional staff including speech pathologists from Luther Hospital and trained Volunteers from the University and the community provide skilled communication partners and logistical support for group members. A steering committee of physicians, community partners and caregivers assists with planning, strategic decision making and maintaining quality.

We look forward to hearing from you. Please don’t hesitate to leave a comment or send us an email.

I am very interested in this aphasia group. I understand it is provided by dr and speech speech pathologists from Luther. My husband has recently seen a speech pathologist from Luther. Could you please tell me who is associated with this group. Thank you..

    • Helen: Tom Hintgen here. We completed our work with the Kindle last year. Our group has been focusing on “getting back to community activities” for the past two years. We enjoyed using the Kindle and we have more ideas about technology in the future. Recently we have been taking a “rest”. The group will meet again early in December.
I will let you know the specific date within a week.

      All the best
      Tom

Thanks Tom…I will be waiting to hear from you about when the group will meet. I think it might be beneficial for Bill to find that he is not alone in this PPA battle..

        Thanks much…Helen
